Dougherty, Vernon

DOUGHERTY, Vernon

1942 - 2023

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Vernon (Vern) Hamilton Dougherty (81) on September 6th, 2023 with his family by his side, following a battle with brain cancer.

Born in Bury Quebec in 1942 to Osborn and Hilda, he shared 59 years of marriage with Marion (Matheson), with whom he lived at their house in Lennoxville until a month before his passing, under her unwavering care and love.

Left to celebrate his life with endless memories are his wife, Marion; daughter Cynthia, her husband Allan Massicotte, and sons Drew and Matthew (who affectionally called him “Rod”); his son Michael, wife Sandi Bent, and son Kieran; his brother Delbert and wife Verna; and many nieces, nephews and close friends.  He is predeceased by his brothers Roger and Durwood, and sister Doreen (Dody).

Vern was actively involved with and proud of his family and supported his community and many charities.  His infectious levity and remarkable ability to turn strangers into friends were the hallmarks of his character.  He spent most of his career as a carpenter for the Eastern Townships School Board, while operating his lawn and garden equipment business (Dougherty Equipment) on evenings and weekends.  In addition to his extraordinary love for animals, his other passions included traveling in their camper to destinations like Florida and New Brunswick, where they forged lasting friendships and beautiful memories.

Special thanks to the staff at the CHUS, who provided excellent care and compassion during unprecedented challenges to the medical system, and to the Grace Village for their care during his final days.  Additional thanks to his friends and many members of the community who helped support him throughout his illness.

Visitation will be held at Cass Funeral Home, 3006 College St. Sherbrooke (Lennoxville), on Friday, September 15th, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. A brief service will take place at the same location on Saturday, September 16th, at 1:00 PM, with visitation starting at 12. Internement at the Malvern Cemetery in Lennoxville.  A reception will follow, where stories of Vernon's remarkable life can be shared.

In lieu of flowers, we kindly request that donations be directed to the Grace Village Foundation. By contributing to this foundation, you will help ensure that others may experience the same outstanding care and compassion that Vernon received during his journey.

Vernon Dougherty will forever be remembered for his warmth, generosity, and the enduring love he shared with those fortunate enough to have known him. His legacy will remain in the hearts of all who were touched by his presence.
