MASKELL POPE, Doris

1931 - 2021

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Doris Maskell Pope, at the CHUS Hôtel-Dieu, on September 30th in her 91st year, with her family by her side.

Daughter of the late Cecil and Irene Maskell. She was predeceased by her husband Lionel Pope, their son Ronnie and her sisters Jean Olga, Helen, Myrtle and Joyce.

She leaves to mourn her children: Gail (Bruce), Almon (Kathy), Nancy (Mike) and Cindy (Dan), as well as 7 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, others relatives and many dear friends. A heartfelt thank you to her best friend Arnie Stiffel for his companionship and unwavering support. The family also extends their gratitude to the staff at Le Manoir St-Francis, to Dr. Ferenczi, and to the palliative care unit of the CHUS Hôtel-Dieu for their dedication and compassion.

In accordance with her wishes, there will be no service. Cremation has taken place and a private family gathering will be held for the interment.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Cookshire Cemetery Association, Box 933, Cookshire, QC J0B 1M0 would be greatly appreciated by the family.

To the Pope and the Maskell families

My deepest sympathy.

I take the liberty to share with you a personnal souvenir.
I met this woman for the first time in 1959. I was then in my early 14, and having my first student job at Mr. Almon H. Pope Grocery Store. I would sort bottles in the cellar, pack the shelves, etc.
Then, one very nice, hot sunny afternoon of july, monsieur Lionel tells me to stop doing what I was occupied with and to come with him to go to his house. I was glad and proud, seated beside him, a man that I admired, riding in the pick-up to do something, much more fun than working with cans and bottles : mow the lawn !
It was a big enough lawn so that I was out of the store for a good period of time.
But what I appreciated the most to be the summum of happiness was when Mrs. Pope would come out of the house, carrying a tray with and offer me some cold Kool-Aid with ice cubes and a biscuit or a cake to eat. It was the biggest reward of the day. A very happy day.

I loved Lionel and Doris. They were the first anglophones adults that I laughed with. And taught me my first words of english so I can salute both their memory.

Thank you

Doris was a beautiful lady!
She was always well-dressed and proud.
She received me and her grand children at her house for visits with a cup of tea and homemade cookies, she always spoke French with me and also had a very funny stories to tell. She was like a mother to me.
There will always be a space in my heart for her.
